A large number of vaccines contain something called “adjuvants.” Adjuvants are chemicals that cause long-term inflammation to create an immune response to develop protection against viruses. Cats seem to be especially sensitive to these chemicals, much more so than other species. There is much research to support that adjuvants have a strong link to cancerous tumors called sarcomas.
It has been reported that Vaccine Associated Sarcomas (VAS) occur in approximately 1 in 10,000 cats. These are fast-growing, extremely large, and aggressive tumors and require very extensive, expensive surgeries in an attempt to treat them. Although the exact correlation between adjuvants and VAS is unknown, one study noted that adjuvanted vaccines were ten times more likely to develop a sarcoma tumor than non-adjuvanted vaccines.
At West Ballantyne Animal Hospital, we study and research all products recommended for our four-legged patients. We do not recommend the use of adjuvanted vaccines in cats. We would not use them in our own cats, so we definitely would not recommend them for yours! This is why we choose only to carry feline vaccines that are 100% adjuvant-free!
